The Gallup State of the Global Workplace 2024 report was released this week - if employee engagement trends are of interest to you, you can uncover the full findings Here
What are the key takeaways that Cultur.ed is focussing on from the report?
TL;DR
Managers are failing, and they don’t have the support they need to do the leadership part of their job well. It’s making them stressed and disengaged, and that is making your employees miserable. This has a direct impact on the bottom line for your company. You will have lower profitability, increased client churn, more absenteeism and greater turnover. The numbers are really clear on the link between engagement and your profitability and we’ve added more detail about that at the bottom of this post.
Everyone talks about the fact that managers account for 70% of employee engagement, but why are we not more focussed on the managers own engagement?
This years Gallup report found that managers’ own employee engagement and overall satisfaction has substantially declined, and their intent to leave has increased.
We know it will be critical to support and develop managers, because they drive engagement through goal setting, regular, meaningful guidance and clarity on accountability.
Great managers' relationships are grounded in respect and a unique understanding of each employee's unique talents. Most employees indicated that their manager is not fulfilling these responsibilities.
Effective manager development provides employees with the type of manager who helps them achieve the best possible outcomes. This also helps managers remain engaged in their work, and reduces their feeling of stress in the role.
The good news is that there are a set of foundations that we can help you implement that can improve engagement both of your managers and your team, and the results will be almost immediate.
Gallup found strong evidence that decreasing the number of disengaged workers drives positive outcomes within organizations. In the 2024 analysis, the largest study of its kind that includes data from more than 183,000 business units across 53 industries and 90 countries, Gallup found that high-engagement business units are likely to see significantly higher employee wellbeing — as well as higher productivity, profitability and sales — than low-engagement teams:
